Moving House in Dundee: The Complete Week-by-Week Checklist

Packed and labelled moving boxes ready for a house move in Dundee

Moving house in Dundee is exciting, but there is a lot to organise, and the small jobs are the ones that are easiest to forget. This week-by-week moving house checklist takes you from the moment you have a moving date to your first night in your new home, with local tips for moving in and around Dundee.

8 weeks before your move

  • Set your budget. Read our guide to what affects removal costs in Dundee so you know what to plan for.
  • Declutter room by room. Sell, donate or recycle anything you no longer need. The less you move, the less you pay.
  • Get removal quotes. Give each company an accurate item list and tell them about stairs and parking. Request a free quote from Dundee Removals.
  • Check your tenancy or sale dates and confirm key handover times.

6 weeks before

  • Book your removal company. Fridays, weekends and month-end dates fill up quickly.
  • Decide whether you need packing services, or start collecting strong boxes, tape and bubble wrap.
  • Arrange storage if there is a gap between moving out and moving in.
  • Book a skip run to clear out the garage, loft or garden shed.

4 weeks before

  • Start packing things you rarely use: books, seasonal clothes, ornaments and spare bedding.
  • Label every box with its room and a short description of what is inside. Number boxes so you know if one goes missing.
  • Notify your council. Tell Dundee City Council, or the council for your new area, about your change of address for council tax.
  • Register to vote at your new address.
  • Arrange school transfers if you have children.

2 weeks before

  • Update your address with your bank, employer, GP, dentist, DVLA, HMRC, insurance providers and subscriptions.
  • Set up Royal Mail redirection so nothing gets lost in the first few months.
  • Contact your energy, water, broadband and TV providers. Book meter readings for moving day and schedule broadband installation early, because it can take a couple of weeks.
  • Plan parking. Many Dundee streets, especially around the city centre and the West End, have limited or controlled parking. Check what is allowed outside both properties so the removal van can park close to the door.

1 week before

  • Pack everything except the essentials.
  • Defrost the freezer at least 24 hours before moving day.
  • Confirm the details with your removal company: arrival time, both addresses, access and parking.
  • Dismantle furniture, or confirm that your movers will do it, and keep screws in labelled bags.
  • Pack an essentials box (see below).

Your moving day essentials box

Pack one box that travels with you, not in the van, so you can get through the first night without searching through dozens of boxes:

  • Kettle, mugs, tea, coffee and snacks
  • Phone chargers and a multi-plug extension
  • Toilet roll, towels, soap and toiletries
  • Medication and important documents
  • Bedding and a change of clothes for everyone
  • Basic toolkit, scissors and a torch
  • Keys for the new property

On moving day

  1. Take meter readings and photos of the readings at both properties.
  2. Do a final walk-through of every room, cupboard and the loft before you leave.
  3. Show the removal team which items are fragile and which rooms the boxes should go to.
  4. Lock windows and doors, and leave keys as agreed with your landlord or estate agent.
  5. At your new home, check that everything has arrived before the team leaves.

After the move

  • Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first, then work through the rest room by room.
  • Test smoke alarms and find the stopcock and fuse box.
  • Register with a new GP and dentist if you have moved area.
  • Book a skip run for any packaging and rubbish left over.
